Mittelalternative Compositions

These melodies are intended for free and open use and I want you to play them! You may arrange, modify, give a new title, perform, record, and even sell them without asking for permission. The only requirement is to credit me as the composer: „Hilbricht, Nils“. This is codified by the standard „CREATIVE COMMONS BY“ license.

Each piece is available as a downloadable PDF containing the notation in multiple transpositions, information and license details. This is what you should be looking for.

For quick orientation, the website also offers simple playable previews with adjustable tempo and transposition. These are meant as working previews for musicians, not as finished recordings.

The Style

„Mittelalternativ“ is a German wordplay combining Mittelalter (medieval) and alternativ. It is often loosely called “Medieval Music,” though the term is imprecise. This music style centers on single-voice melodies, either traditional or newly composed.

The style emerged mainly in Germany in the 1980s as functional music for medieval markets (similar to Renaissance fairs) and later developed into an independent genre with its own recordings and concerts. The genre is defined very broadly, ranging from newly composed pieces to elements of folk music, fantasy and LARP songs, European folklore, genuine medieval and Renaissance music, and even metal bands using medieval instruments such as bagpipes.
